RGN – JOB DESCRIPTION
a) Scope
To assist in caring for clients in their own home or to work as a member of a nursing team in a hospital, industrial or nursing home situation. Applying professional accountability, knowledge, attitude and skills necessary to maintain a safe and competent standard of nursing practise.
This involves the following responsibilities – (taken from NMC Code of Professional Conduct – November 2004)
“As a registered nurse, midwife or health visitor, you are personally accountable for your practise. In caring for patients and clients, you must:
1. Respect the patient or client as an individual
2. Obtain consent before you give any treatment or care
3. Protect confidential information
4. Cooperate with others in the team
5. Maintain your professional knowledge and competence
6. Be trustworthy
7. Act to identify and minimize risk to patients and clients.”
b) Reporting
The RGN reports to the Branch Manager and liaises with clients and other multidisciplinary team members.
c) Specific Duties
1. To provide high levels of care in line with the needs of the client.
2. To carry out clinical and risk assessments on individual clients, and to prepare Care Plans
3. To administer and record medication
4. Encourage homecare clients to remain as physically and mentally active as possible
5. In the case of death of a homecare client, note time breathing and pulse stopped, notify GP (if appropriate) next of kin and Branch Manager.
d) Competence / Characteristics
1. Excellent communication skills
2. Ability to work unsupervised and make decisions
3. Flexibility – may be required to work at short notice
4. Smart appearance at all times
e) Qualifications / Education
1. All qualified members must be registered with the NMC.
2. A valid and in date pin number must be held. |
